World Bicycle Day - Recognising a Green & a Healthy Solution

World Bicycle Day - Recognising a Green & a Healthy Solution

Every year 3rd June is observed as World Bicycle Day to promote the use of bicycles for a healthy lifestyle and a greener environment. Upon realising the uniqueness, versatility and longevity of a cycle, the United Nations General Assembly chose this day to spread awareness of its benefits. A bicycle is reliable, affordable, environment friendly and has tons of health benefits:

  • Regular cycling can increase your strength and stamina
  • Regulates blood circulation
  • Improves cardiovascular fitness
  • Makes muscles stronger and cures muscle pain, joint pain, etc.
  • Decreases body fat levels
  • Reduces stress
  • Enhances muscle flexibility
  • Improves metabolism
  • Improves concentration power as it teaches balancing
  • Improves mental health as it is a fun activity

Along with these health benefits, there is more to using a bicycle.

Using a bicycle is one of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals recognised by the United Nations to transform our world - that is the importance of cycling. More than our fitness, it holds the power to impact the world for the better.

The cities of the world occupy just three per cent of the Earth’s surface but account for 75 per cent of carbon emissions and 60-80 per cent of energy consumption. Therefore, it has become essential for everyone to take part in making our cities and communities inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable.

So, once the pandemic is over and we are allowed to move out freely, make sure to step out on a bicycle!
